Indiana’s HB 1134 has passed the House. All its supporters had to do was not openly endorse Nazis in order to avoid the sort of unwelcome attention its companion bill in the state Senate received. The sections of this bill which dance around the edges of “stop teaching about racism” have been well-covered elsewhere. What … Continue reading HB 1134 & Mandatory Nationalism

Yes, the Nazis were bad. But adding an “unless you’re talking about the Nazis” provision to the bill doesn’t solve anything. Wrestling with the relative “good” and “bad” of various economic systems, political beliefs, lifestyles, attitudes, behaviors, and the like, is one of the primary functions of secondary education. Yes, we’d like them to be employable. Yes, we aspire to see them happy and personally fulfilled. But somewhere in the mix is this crazy hope that they’ll be informed, rational citizens, capable of weighing complex ideas and understanding multiple points of view.

Unlike, for example, the folks pushing this legislation.

I’ve been breaking down Indiana’s proposed Senate Bill 167 – the one that’s been in the news lately for all sorts of things, including the insistence of one of its authors that educators needed to stop criticizing Nazis for doing Nazi stuff and be more neutral about “-isms.” He had to dial that one back … Continue reading Indiana SB 167 (Part Three)

In Part One, I expressed my chagrin over what seems to be the Indiana GOP’s effort to elevate the voices of those unwilling to participate in public education in any sort of helpful way while making it nigh impossible for educators to comply with the reporting and other bureaucratic requirements of this bill. Now it’s … Continue reading Indiana Senate Bill 167 (Part Two)

This largely symbolic decree verified the great beacon of hope already guiding millions of Negro slaves who had been freed by the fire of American greatness. It came as a joyous reminder of their long flight from their REAL captivity (which started in Africa - let’s not ever forget that slavery started IN Africa) to the glorious shores of America.

But 100 years later, the Negro is even more free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is far better than the manacles of tribalism and the chains of paganism. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a prosperous continent in the midst of a vast ocean of freedom and prosperity… And so we’ve come here today to celebrate our ever-improving condition.
