A thoughtful and excellently written essay. I hope you're writing a book. I'd buy it. Keep writing. :) Dan

In reply to Mary Brown Boren.

Well Said

Important perspective and a good point. I would respectfully suggest that the obligation is a personal one rather than a state duty. For the Hebrew, there was no distinction between secular obligations and religious duty. That's specifically not the case for us today.

On the other hand, we are perhaps too quick to neglect or erase the role of faith in shaping history - through individuals or entire peoples. Just because I don't think we should twist things to fit a religious mold doesn't mean we're justified running from it or wishing it weren't there. The suggestion we shortchange men of God in our historical accounts is not entirely without foundation - although I can't say I'm crazy about some of the proposed solutions so far.

Thanks for keeping me honest, and for reading.

It is fair to say that the
It is fair to say that the Israelites were killed for not reading the law that told them how to safely handle the ark. And apparently their failure to "read and know" was not just a mistake it was a moral failure. It is our moral obligation to know and learn and to reflect the honor of God in nurturing our intellect.
