I realize many of you are rather tied to the minutiae of state standards and the boundaries of modern Oklahoma as you plow through this course. I’m in no way criticizing that approach when I confess that I am not.
I’m far more interested in the bigger themes and movements reflected in and impacting I.T. (soon to be Oklahoma) and using them to continue developing Social Studies Skills. So, much of what’s here isn’t TECHNICALLY Oklahoma History, but… I mean… yes it is.
NOTE: Posted Powerpoints will show up as a page of garble if you merely click on them. You’ll need to RIGHT CLICK and choose SAVE LINK AS in order to download it to your computer.
Postbellum I.T. & Expansion on the Great Plains (PPT/Handouts) – Changes in I.T., Homesteading, Soddies & Dugouts, and the Sears Catalogue!
Postbellum Indian Wars (Graphic Organizer) – It’s tricky sharing stuff created with specific textbooks in mind, but this particular organizer is completed with a combination of OK / American History books and maybe a tiny bit of Googling/Wikipedia to fill in here or there. I try to cover the major “Indian Wars” of this period – not just Washita – enough to give context to the second wave of Indian Removal and to better understand, well… so many other things. Still, we don’t have time to do it properly, so this is a condensed approach. Do with it what you will, or don’t.
If you like it 90% worth but want to be able to edit it, email me and I’ll send you the Publisher version instead.
Dances With Wolves Guide – Go ahead and laugh. I’ll wait. We watch this in class every year – the whole thing – and I consider it time well-spent. I usually provide or post this ahead of time, and when we’re finished I’ll choose several prompts and assign them. Tatanka.
Strangers In Two Worlds – From American History magazine, June 2007. I, um… I might not TECHNICALLY have permission to post this, but I’m fairly certain I found it online and merely formatted it for easier classroom use. I think. Probably. If you’re from AH and want me to take it down, let me know. Otherwise, IT’S FOR THE CHILDREN.
Zitkala-Sa & Assignment Options – I love so many things about this narrative. I’ve included the options I give my kids in case you’re not sure what you’d rather do with it instead. Did I mention I love so many things about this narrative?
Populism Overview (PPT / Handouts) – Most of my PPTs are pretty light on text, but this one is particularly so. It’s mostly a visual aid to class discussion of the various issues covered during this time. Includes very general coverage of Social Darwinism, the Gospel of Wealth, etc.
“Let’s Have A (Populist) Party!” – My summary of Populism in the late 19th century and the goals of the Populist Party. This is one of my better pieces, I think. It’s about 6 pages in handout form.
